An Irish birthday, a Polish marriage, a Philadelphia correction, and a German will · 20 to 26 September

Two Cows of Her Choice and a Horse Called Paul; plus A Tree that Saved Our Ancestral Parish
This edition follows two of Charlie's ancestors and two of Kathi's. Four documents show how a birthday, a marriage, a corrected household, and a colonial will can strengthen a family line while still leaving new questions to pursue.

Nancy's September birthday opens an Irish family mystery that Pennsylvania records can identify, but have not yet carried back to a particular Irish parish.

Nancy Stewart Peoples was born in Ireland on 20 September 1838, according to her Pennsylvania death certificate. The 1900 census independently supports September 1838 as her birth month and year. She died at Kittanning on 3 December 1911.
Nancy's contemporary obituary states that she and John Peoples had been married for fifty-five years, placing their marriage about 1856. Their exact marriage record and location have not yet been found. The 1860 census appears to record the young couple in Valley Township as John and Ann Peoples, with both adults born in Ireland. Later censuses continue the family through Valley Township and Kittanning.
Nancy's death certificate identifies her parents as William Stewart and Mary Patterson, both born in Ireland.
Nancy's obituary names six children who survived her: Margaret, Florence, and Elmer at home; Mrs. Joseph Turney of Kittanning; Mrs. Emmett King of Manorville; and Mrs. James Heckman of Wickboro. It also reports eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. These survivors do not replace the reconstructed total of ten children, which includes children who may have died earlier. Mrs. James Heckman was Martha Anne, remembered as Granny Peoples, who continued Charlie's direct line. Granny Peoples Heckman was a significant matriarch in the Heckman family of the early 20th Century.
The obituary identifies Nancy as a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Services were held at the family residence and the church before burial in Kittanning Cemetery. Nancy's birthplace remains simply Ireland. Finding a passenger record, Irish church register, sibling, or hometown association may eventually identify the family's county and parish of origin.

George Farrell's original Pennsylvania death certificate records that he was born in Philadelphia on 25 September 1850. He died there on 8 November 1915, lived at 1519 North 13th Street, and was buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery. His daughter Elizabeth Webb supplied the information, but did not know the names of George's parents.
George married Anna or Hannah Seitzinger about 1872. The exact church marriage remains missing, but the 1880 census places George and Hannah together at 747 Howard Street in Philadelphia. Their daughter Elizabeth Stewart Farrell's 1879 Methodist baptism also names George and Hannah. The 1900 census reports twenty-eight years of marriage and includes daughter Mary S. Farrell.
This family required a significant correction. The inherited GEDCOM had merged Mary with an unrelated William and Rosie Farrell household. Mary's death certificate names her mother as Hannah Sightsinger, a phonetic form of Seitzinger, and the correctly matched 1880 and 1900 households identify George and Hannah as her parents. William and Rosie are excluded from Kathi's direct line.
George's certificate contains no middle initial. Records that call him George N., W., or K. Farrell are retained only as search variants until a document establishes a middle name. His unknown parents and missing marriage record remain open research targets.

Luzerne County marriage-license docket 8470 records the marriage of John Szerszen and Mary Ann Kopocz on 23 September 1890 at Nanticoke. The license had been issued on 27 August. Both were Polish-born residents of Wanamie, neither had married previously, and John worked as a laborer. Mary's occupation appears to read domestic.
The record preserves the contemporary surname forms Szerszen and Kopocz. John later appeared as John or Charles Shershen, while Mary's surname appears as Kopacz and Kopiec in family records. These variants reflect language, handwriting, and American recordkeeping. They are preserved rather than forced into a single spelling.
Five children are attached to John and Mary's family in the inherited tree: Joseph, Frank, Leon, Walter, and Anna. Anna's death certificate names Mary Kopacz as her mother, and Frank's certificate independently gives Mary Kopiec. Family testimony remembers Anna as Mary's last child and says Mary died while Anna was very young. Mary's reported 1903 death still needs an original civil or church record.
John later married Margaret Bozik. The later household must not be used to make Margaret the biological mother of every child. The 1890 marriage record proves John and Mary as a couple, while Anna's and Frank's records provide the separate bridge to their children.

On 26 September 1747, Johannes Landis of Lower Milford Township, Bucks County, made his last will in German. The document identifies his wife Ann, his sons Samuel and Jacob, and his brother-in-law and executor Jacob Musselman. The estate accounting later divided the residue among nine children.
Johannes directed that Samuel, his son, would receive the 125-acre homestead for a stated payment of 150 pounds. The widow Ann Landis, Samuel's mother, was to receive the bed and bedstead, two cows of her choice, a horse called Paul, three sheep, one-third of the estate, rooms in the house, and use of the still kettle during her widowhood. The provisions offer an unusually personal view of the household and the security Johannes intended for his wife.
Although Johannes lived in Bucks County, the will was handled in Philadelphia. It was entered in Philadelphia Will Book 1, page 397, with original papers numbered 255. A published family study reports that the estate inventory was taken on 12 April 1748, placing Johannes's death after the will date and before that inventory.
The surviving images are high-resolution scans of a photocopy supplied by the Philadelphia Register of Wills from the original German will. The parchment had split along old folds and was later repaired with transparent tape. Portions of pages 1 and 2 were repositioned incorrectly during that repair, and tape obscures some words. The later red annotations identify proposed readings and are not part of the original document.
This will also corrects an earlier family-tree error. The Johan Landis who arrived aboard the Pink Plaisance on 21 September 1732 became associated with Ephrata in Lancaster County. Kathi's Johannes was already connected with Bucks County by 1730. The ship passenger was a different man and is excluded from this lineage.
